Back from the Brink January 19, 2024

Join health advocates all across the US by endorsing the Back from the Brink statement.

“Today, the risk of nuclear catastrophe is greater than ever before, but we need not accept this fate as inevitable. Back from the Brink represents a crossroads, blazing a new trail with concrete steps to take us away from danger and towards a safer future for humanity. The fight against the threat of nuclear weapons can be daunting, but Back from the Brink has created a worthy road map for battle.”

William J. Perry, former U.S. Secretary of Defense

Not since 1953 have we been so close to the brink of a global catastrophe, according to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists Doomsday Clock. Now, once again, it is with extreme urgency that we must act to pull ourselves back from the brink.

Many of Maine’s organizations are finding common ground when it comes to the humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons. And when it comes to nuclear war, we are united in our values of seeking a world free of nuclear weapons and the threat of catastrophic humanitarian, economic, and environmental destruction.

The intersection of disparate organizations becomes an important place of strength to urge our policymakers and the U.S .to find a better way forward through diplomacy and out of a trajectory toward nuclear conflict.

(download the full statement and FAQ here)

We call on the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war by:

  • Actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.
  • Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first.
  • Ending the sole, unchecked authority of any president to launch a nuclear attack.
  • Taking US nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert.
  • Cancelling the plan to replace its entire arsenal with enhanced weapons.
