Dr Landrigan is an international leader in public health and preventive medicine. He is a pediatrician and epidemiologist and his pioneering research on the effects of lead poisoning in children led the US government to mandate removal of lead from gasoline. His leadership of a National Academy of Sciences Committee on pesticides in children’s diets resulted in the passage of the Food Quality Protection Act in 1996, a major US federal pesticide law and the first environmental statute to contain specific protections for infants and children. Dr. Landrigan served as Senior Advisor to the US EPA where he was instrumental in helping to establish the EPA’s Office of Children’s Health Protection. Dr. Landrigan has been a leader in developing the National Children’s Study, the largest study of children’s health and the environment ever launched in the United States. He has been a member of the faculty of Mount Sinai School of Medicine since 1985 and named Dean for Global Health in 2010.

Rededication of the “Bernard Lown Peace Bridge” over the Androscoggin River. Speakers will be calling for nuclear disarmament and for no wars at all, just as Dr. Lown did. We will be walking the short distance from there to the Peace Bridge, where our observances will end in front of a monument honoring Dr. Lown.
