About Us:

Mainers Ending Nuclear Dangers or MEND is a coalition of Maine citizens of diverse backgrounds organized by Maine PSR. We work together toward a world free of nuclear weapons and advocating for common sense nuclear weapons policies to secure a safer, more just future. These truths are the reasons for our work. Nuclear weapons are the most destructive and inhumane ever created. Even their limited use would cause the immediate death of many millions and worldwide changes that would completely disrupt our civilization. Without ever being used, their continued production and modernization cause damage to the environment, divert money and resources away from meeting human need, violate international law, and maintain the threat of global destruction by accident, miscalculation, or war. Immediate reduction of nuclear dangers and eventual elimination of these weapons must be achieved.

MEND uses the five solutions of Back from the Brink:

Actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.

Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first.

Ending the sole, unchecked authority of any U.S. President to launch a nuclear attack.

Taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert.

Cancelling the plan to replace the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons.

Mission

Use the combined power and voice of informed Mainers to educate and advocate for reduced reliance on nuclear weapons and their eventual elimination.

Vision

Everyone who lives, visits, and works in Maine lives free of the risk and expense of nuclear weapons.

Primary Goal

To immediately reduce the risks that nuclear weapons will be used and with verifiable treaties eliminate them. While we recognize this is an ambitious goal, we believe it is essential for the future of all Mainers.
