Approved unanimously by the PSR Maine Board of Directors on December 23, 2025
Physicians for Social Responsibility Maine (PSR Maine) believes that the best way to protect human health from existential threats is to work to eliminate these threats. This in turn is dependent on the ability of our government and of Maine communities and institutions to make decisions rooted in science, justice, and compassion.
Today, our democracy is under unprecedented threat. Policy decisions must derive from verifiable evidence and data, not the opinions of special interest groups. Disinformation, attacks on science, intimidation of public institutions, and assaults on civic life are undermining our ability to deal with issues that are at the core of PSR Maine’s mission: the prevention of nuclear war, addressing climate change, and reducing toxic exposures.
Our health and our democracy are inextricably intertwined. Responding to the current threats to our democratic system of government is in full accord with PSR Maine’s mission. It is integral to all of our work.
For these reasons, PSR Maine has identified “Safeguarding and Strengthening Democracy to Protect Our Health” as an added priority. It underpins all of our work: our advocacy, our education programs, and our community engagement.
